Understanding Washington DC’s Seasons

Washington DC experiences a full range of seasons, both from a weather and tourism perspective!  Understanding the seasonal variations will help with planning your trip, as weather, special events, and tourist volumes shift significantly throughout the year.

Spring (March to May)

Spring in DC is arguably the most visually stunning time to visit, marked by the famous cherry blossoms that peak from mid-March to early April. The city begins to warm up, with average temperatures ranging from the high 40s in early March to the mid-70s by late May. However, this is also one of the busiest periods, especially from mid-March through June, due to school spring breaks and the influx of visitors coming for the Cherry Blossom Festival.

April to mid-June is also the busy time for school trips to our nation’s capital. Many middle schools and high schools plan class trips as an “end of year” reward or to expand on the coursework of the school year. For this reason, you might experience larger crowds and longer waits at busy museums, attractions, public transit, and restaurants that can accommodate groups.

When visiting Washington DC during the spring, it’s wise to pack for variable weather. Include layers such as light jackets, long-sleeve shirts, and comfortable shoes for extensive walking. Spring is allergy season here, so bring allergy medicine if you’re sensitive to pollen. Also, pack a travel umbrella or waterproof jacket for occasional rain as well as sunglasses and a hat for sunny days.

Summer (June to August)

Summers in DC are hot and humid, with temperatures often climbing into the 90s. While this can be uncomfortable, the longer days and many outdoor activities get both locals and tourists out to sights and local restaurants. From Fourth of July celebrations to music and food festivals, there’s no shortage of events. However, summer also corresponds with busy tourist season, when families visit during school breaks.

If visiting Washington DC in the summer, prepare for hot and humid conditions by packing lightweight, breathable clothing. A water bottle can be filled at stations around the city to help you stay hydrated. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are a must to protect your skin from the strong summer sun, especially when touring outdoor attractions.

Lastly, don’t forget to bring bug repellent spray or wipes, particularly if you plan to visit parks or participate in evening outdoor events, since our mosquitoes are known to be very hungry!

Fall (September to November)

Fall sees a drop in both temperature and tourist numbers, making it one of the best times to visit DC. The weather is mild, with highs typically ranging from the 70s in September to the mid-50s in November. The changing leaves offer a beautiful backdrop for exploring the outdoor attractions and historic sites. September and October are particularly pleasant, offering a reprieve from the busy summer while still buzzing with plenty of events.

When packing for a fall DC trip, prepare for changing weather by wearing layers.  A waterproof jacket or an umbrella might be needed, while comfortable walking shoes are always a must. Additionally, a hat and gloves may be needed for chillier days, especially in late fall. For evenings out, a few dressier options will be useful, particularly if planning to visit nicer restaurants or attend performances.

Winter (December to February)

Winters can be chilly, with temperatures often dipping into the 30s. Snowfall varies each year, with recent years seeing less and less.  Despite the cold, winter is a great time to visit if you prefer a quieter city. January and February are especially calm, except when the Presidential Inauguration draws crowds every four years. Holiday decorations and events like the National Christmas Tree Lighting add a festive touch to the cityscape.

When visiting Washington DC in winter it’s important to pack for cold weather. Include a warm coat, gloves, a hat, and a scarf to stay comfortable while exploring outdoors. An umbrella and waterproof boots or shoes are also advisable, as the winter months can be rainy or snowy.
